Bear season opens in New Jersey after state's first fatal attack - UPI.com

"To achieve the numbers they want to achieve, they're going to have to move the season earlier," Szpond told NJ.com. Bears were driven out of New Jersey as their habitat became farmland. But in recent years, they have migrated across the New York and Pennsylvania borders, becoming common in the northwestern part of the state with increasing numbers of nuisance encounters with people. Darsh Patel, a Rutgers University student, was mauled by a bear in late September in a West Milford preserve. Police said Patel and his friends were warned of the animal by other hikers and deliberately went to look for it, photographed it and then scattered and ran off when it got too close for comfort. Patel is the first known victim of a bear attack in the state.

Stanford said it is standard practice for Internal Affairs to investigate any incident involving an off-duty cop. Evers, 45, was treated at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for his injuries. The assailant is described in police records as a thin, bearded man in his 40s who wore a dark jacket and red shirt.
